>Mordechai Vanunu, a Sephardic Jew whose family emigrated from Morocco to Israel when he was 10 years old, made the headlines in 1986 when he revealed to the British press the existence of Tel Aviv's secret nuclear weapons program. Mossad agents subsequently captured him by a ruse; Vanunu was convinced to fly to Rome where a female operative, Cheryl Ben Tovi, posed as a tourist and offered him sex. When they went to a hotel room for the planned intimate encounter, the agents drugged him, abducted him, and brought him back to Israel to stand trial for espionage.

>He served 18 years in prison after a secret trial, much of it in solitary confinement, although this punishment was neither permitted in Israel's penal code nor imposed by the sentence, during which time he said he was subjected to "cruel and barbaric" treatment. Vanunu maintained that the prison authorities had it out for him as he had converted to Christianity. After his release in 2004, he was subjected to various harsh conditions and was twice jailed for violating his parole terms, when he attempted to talk to foreigners and tried to leave Israel. In 1987, he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award for "his courage and self-sacrifice in revealing the extent of Israel's nuclear weapons program." Tel Aviv continues to maintain that Vanunu, who said he did it in the interest of world peace, is a traitor.3
