Porter Airlines flight 444 had already left the gate and was taxiing toward the runway for its 10:30 p.m. departure when a flight attendant noticed the problem. A young child was standing up in their seat and refused to buckle their seatbelt. The parent tried. The crew tried. Nobody could get the child to sit down and stay buckled in. With a passenger unrestrained, the plane could not legally take off. So the pilot turned the aircraft around and headed back to the terminal, where ground crews had to bring out a mobile staircase, remove the child and their parent, retrieve everyone's checked bags, and refile the flight paperwork from scratch. By the time all of that was finished, it was well past 12:30 a.m., the hour Victoria International Airport's runway closes for the night. The flight could not be rescheduled and take off before curfew, so it was cancelled outright. Every other passenger on board was left stranded at the airport. Porter had to rebook them onto new flights the next day.
