One of the best-known early deployments involved 30 dogs. According to later summaries drawing on Soviet material, only four managed to detonate near German tanks, while six reportedly ran back into the Soviet trenches and exploded there, killing or wounding Soviet soldiers. That risk was serious enough that handlers were instructed to shoot returning dogs before they reached friendly positions if they were still carrying armed charges.
